Exu lies in the far west of Pernambuco, in the semi-arid sertão of north-eastern Brazil, close to the escarpment of the Chapada do Araripe. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets and squares. Around it stretch the dry lands of the interior, crossed by roads and seasonal watercourses.
The town is famous as the birthplace of Luiz Gonzaga, the singer and accordionist known across Brazil as the king of baião. His songs gave the sertão a voice, and Exu keeps his memory alive with a museum and a strong attachment to his music.
