Eyl is an old coastal town in the Nugaal region of north-eastern Somalia, where the Nugaal valley meets the Indian Ocean. On a map the most striking element is the coastline itself, a long, fairly straight edge against the open sea, with the dry valley and rocky hills rising behind the settlement.
The town has a place in Somali history as a base of the Dervish movement led by Mohammed Abdullah Hassan in the early twentieth century. More recently it received international attention during the years of piracy off the Somali coast. On the map it appears as a small group of streets and tracks between the shore and the hills.
