Fengcheng lies in eastern Liaoning, within the administrative area of Dandong, not far from the border with North Korea. On a map, the city occupies a valley among hills, with a river running through the town and ridges rising on several sides. The central area forms a compact grid of streets, while newer districts follow the valley floor outwards.
The best-known landmark is Phoenix Mountain, a rugged range of peaks close to the city that gives Fengcheng its name and draws visitors for its cliffs, paths and temples. Railways and roads pass through the valley, linking the city with Dandong and Shenyang, and fields and villages occupy the flatter land around it.
