Fengle lies in the northeastern part of Chongqing municipality, a region of steep hills, narrow valleys and terraced slopes that drain toward the Yangtze. In country like this, towns cannot spread freely, and from above Fengle takes the shape its terrain allows.
Roads follow the contours rather than cutting across them, bending along valley floors and doubling back as they climb. Built-up streets gather where the land is flattest, while smaller lanes and paths thread out toward farmland and scattered houses on the surrounding hillsides.
