Fetlar is one of the North Isles of Shetland, lying east of Yell and south of Unst. From above it is a compact, irregular island with headlands and rocky coast along much of its edge, broken by sheltered bays and a handful of small inlets. Inside, the land is open moorland and pasture, gentler and greener than on its neighbours.
Often called the garden of Shetland for its fertile ground, the island has a small community centred around Houbie on the south coast. A main road runs across it from the ferry terminal in the northwest to the southern and eastern settlements, and most of the rest of the map is open, unbuilt land.
Fetlar is known for its birds, above all the red-necked phalaropes that breed on its wetlands and draw birdwatchers every summer.
