Figueira da Foz lies on Portugal's central Atlantic coast, where the Mondego River reaches the sea after passing through Coimbra. The estuary is the town's defining feature from above: a broad river mouth with harbour basins, breakwaters and bridges, and the town gathered on its northern bank.
The town is known for its remarkably wide sandy beach, which has grown over the years as sand built up north of the harbour walls, leaving the seafront promenade far back from the water. To the north, the old fishing village of Buarcos and the headland of Cabo Mondego close the bay.
