Fire Island runs along the south shore of Long Island in New York, a barrier island dozens of kilometres long and often only a few hundred metres wide. On a map it is a single slim line, with the Atlantic on one side and Great South Bay on the other. Few coastal shapes are this stark or this easy to read.
Most of the island is car-free. Its communities are connected by boardwalks and reached by ferry from the Long Island mainland. Settlements appear on the map as small, dense clusters of lanes spaced along the strip, separated by stretches of dunes, maritime forest and protected land within Fire Island National Seashore.
The Fire Island Lighthouse stands near the western end, and the Sunken Forest, a rare holly forest behind the dunes, lies further east. Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines have been important LGBTQ communities since the mid-twentieth century.
