Mpassa River
The river curves along the town, adding a single strong waterline to the map. It separates the built-up hills from the low, green land along its banks.

La mappa
Franceville Map Poster & Print
Franceville lies in the Haut-Ogooué province of southeastern Gabon, on hills above the Mpassa River. On a map the town spreads across ridges and slopes, so its streets follow the ground in curves and bends rather than a strict grid. The river forms a clear line along the edge of the town, bordered by greener, lower land.
The Trans-Gabon Railway runs across the country from the coast near Libreville and ends here, reaching the town through forested country. Franceville is also an important administrative and educational centre for the region. It has a university of science and technology and a well-known centre for medical research.
The explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza established the town in 1880 and gave it its name. A Franceville map poster emphasises how the river, the hills and the roads relate to one another. The town's winding streets stand out against the broad open space of the surrounding forest and savanna.

Railway terminus
The Trans-Gabon Railway ends at Franceville. The line arrives from the west through forest and stops at the edge of town.
Hillside streets
Roads wind across the town's ridges and slopes. They give the map an irregular, flowing pattern shaped far more by the terrain than by planning.
