Freeport sits on the South Shore of Long Island in Nassau County, where the land breaks up into canals, creeks and marshes before reaching the bays behind Jones Beach. On the map, the northern part of the village is a regular grid of streets, while the southern part turns into a comb of narrow canals lined with houses and boat docks.
The Long Island Rail Road runs through the village, linking it to New York City. Freeport is known for the Nautical Mile along Woodcleft Canal, a waterfront strip of seafood restaurants, fishing boats and marinas. Its harbour has long been a base for fishing and boating on the South Shore.
