Freital lies just southwest of Dresden in the valley of the Weißeritz. The Red and Wild Weißeritz rivers meet at Hainsberg, and the combined river runs northeast through the town toward the Elbe. The main road and railway run along the valley floor beside it. The result is a long, narrow town, with side streets climbing the wooded slopes.
The town itself is relatively young. It was formed in 1921 when several industrial villages, including Deuben, Döhlen and Potschappel, merged under a new name. Coal mining in the Döhlen basin and later steelmaking shaped its growth. The Windberg hill overlooks the valley, and downstream the river enters the narrow Plauenscher Grund before reaching Dresden.

Merged villages
Former villages such as Deuben, Döhlen and Potschappel can still be seen as small street clusters along the valley. They are traces of the 1921 merger.

Residential streets zigzag up the valley sides toward the heights. Their tight curves contrast with the straight lines along the valley floor.
