Frontignan lies on the Languedoc coast between Sète and Montpellier, on a strip of land where lagoons meet the Mediterranean. On a map the town is framed by water: shallow étangs on either side, the sea to the south, and the Canal du Rhône à Sète running straight through. The old centre is a compact knot of narrow lanes close to the canal.
Frontignan is best known for Muscat de Frontignan, a sweet white wine made from muscat grapes grown on the land behind the town. To the south, Frontignan-Plage is a separate seaside district on a narrow sand barrier. Its streets run in short lines between lagoon and beach. The old core and the beachfront give the map two distinct characters.
