Fu’an lies in the mountains of northeastern Fujian, a county-level city under Ningde. Its map is shaped by terrain: the urban area follows a river valley, streets packed onto the flatter ground, while steep, forested hills rise on either side. As the city has grown, new districts have spread along the valley and onto terraced slopes, forming an elongated, organic outline.
The area is well known for tea. Tanyang Gongfu, one of the classic Fujian black teas, takes its name from Tanyang village in Fu’an, and tea gardens cover many of the surrounding hillsides. The city is also an industrial centre for the region, while the mountain landscape gives it a character quite different from Fujian's coastal cities.
