Fulda has one of the most legible centres in Hesse. The old town sits on rising ground west of the Fulda River, with the cathedral square and the palace grounds forming a large open area in the middle of the street plan. Around them, medieval lanes curve in irregular blocks, and later districts spread out along the valley and the railway.
The city grew from a Benedictine abbey founded in 744, and the cathedral holds the tomb of Saint Boniface, which has made Fulda a destination for pilgrims for centuries. Most of the centre was rebuilt in Baroque style under the prince-abbots, which explains the grand axes between cathedral, palace and park.
