Gary was founded in 1906 by the United States Steel Corporation and named after its chairman, Elbert H. Gary. From above you can see that it was planned for industry. A long band of mill ground runs along the Lake Michigan shore, and the residential city spreads south from it in a regular grid of numbered avenues.
Broadway runs north to south through the middle of the city and splits the grid into east and west halves. The Grand Calumet River cuts across the northern districts, and railway corridors run east to west beside it. Toward the east, the Miller Beach neighbourhood breaks the pattern with curving streets set between dunes and lakeshore.
A Gary map poster shows how completely one company shaped a place. The shoreline is lined with mill infrastructure, the grid stops at the tracks, and the dunes and marshes survive at the edges. The city is also known as the childhood home of the Jackson family, and Indiana Dunes National Park begins just along the coast.

Broadway runs north to south as the city's main axis, from the mill gates through downtown. The numbered avenues cross it at regular intervals and form the grid.
Dunes at Miller
At the eastern edge, the straight grid gives way to winding streets among wooded dunes. It is the first stretch of the landscape protected further along the shore.
