Gero lies in the mountains of Gifu Prefecture, where the Hida River runs through a steep, narrow valley. The town has had to fit itself into the available flat ground, so the map shows a long, slender band of streets following the river, with forested slopes rising sharply on both sides.
Gero Onsen is one of Japan's most celebrated hot spring resorts. In the seventeenth century the Confucian scholar Hayashi Razan named it among the three finest hot springs in the country, alongside Arima and Kusatsu. Ryokan and bathhouses line the banks, and the JR Takayama Line follows the valley through town.
