Goes sits in the middle of Zuid-Beveland, and its map is shaped by water. The historic centre is a compact oval surrounded by the remains of its old moats, with a market square and a large Gothic church at its heart. The streets inside the ring are short and irregular, typical of a medieval Dutch market town.
From the centre, a straight harbour canal runs north toward the Oosterschelde. On a poster this makes a strong line that gives the town a clear direction and recalls the time when Goes traded by boat. Newer neighbourhoods have grown around the old core in a looser, more open pattern.
