Fasil Ghebbi enclosure
The royal compound, with its walls and castles, sits in the centre of the city. On the map, its outline is a clear, well-defined shape among the winding streets.

La mappa
Gonder Map Poster & Print
Gonder lies in the northern highlands of Ethiopia, north of Lake Tana, at an elevation of over two thousand metres. The city is spread across hills and the valleys of small rivers, so its streets curve and branch instead of forming a grid. Many neighbourhoods follow the ridges, and the lower ground is left open along the watercourses.
In the seventeenth century, Emperor Fasilides made Gonder his capital, and it remained the seat of Ethiopian emperors for about two centuries. The Fasil Ghebbi royal enclosure, with its stone castles and walls, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Fasilides' Bath and the Debre Berhan Selassie church, known for its painted ceiling of angels' faces, are nearby.
A Gonder map poster places the walled compound at the centre, with the city's roads branching out across the hills around it. The enclosure shows up as a clear shape in the middle of an otherwise organic pattern. It is a map for people with ties to Amhara and for anyone who has walked among the castles.

Fasilides' Bath
This walled pool complex lies outside the centre, near a river. It is used for the Timkat celebrations and gives the map a distinct landmark away from the core.
Hillside streets
The roads follow ridges and valleys, curving around the slopes. This gives Gonder a flowing street pattern shaped by the highland terrain.

Perché Gonder
Una mappa che ha un significato
Gonder is a symbol of Ethiopian history, and a map of it carries that weight quietly. The castle enclosure and the hills around it make a composition that is both historical and personal.
