Gough Island lies in the South Atlantic and is part of the Tristan da Cunha group, a British overseas territory. It is volcanic and rugged. From above it is a compact, somewhat elongated block of high ground, divided by steep valleys that run down to a cliff-lined coast with few places to land.
There are no towns on Gough. The only human presence is a weather station operated by South Africa on the southeast coast, staffed by a small rotating team. Everything else on the map is terrain and shoreline, with the Southern Ocean on all sides.
Together with Inaccessible Island, Gough is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is recognised as one of the most important seabird colonies in the world, including nearly all of the breeding Tristan albatrosses. A Gough Island map poster shows its hard volcanic outline in plain black and white.
