The old core
A compact centre of short, irregular streets marks the historic town. It sits among the more regular blocks that have grown up around it.

La mappa
Groß-Gerau Map Poster & Print
Groß-Gerau is the seat of the district of the same name in southern Hesse. It lies in the Hessian Ried, the low plain east of the Rhine. The surrounding land is so flat that roads, rail lines and ditches run in long straight lines with little to interrupt them. Frankfurt, Mainz and Darmstadt are all within easy reach, and the region's transport routes pass close to the town.
The centre is a small historic core with a compact street pattern. Newer residential areas spread outward in regular blocks, and the rail line and main roads cut across the plain. Beyond the houses the land is almost entirely agricultural, divided into narrow strips. Small watercourses drain the Ried toward the Rhine to the west.
A Groß-Gerau map poster is a study in flatness. There are no hills to bend the streets, so the town's layout comes from its field boundaries, its railway and its roads. The result is a clean, graphic composition that shows how a town grows on a plain when the terrain imposes nothing.

Ried field pattern
Around the town, long narrow fields and straight farm tracks create a fine linear texture. It is typical of the reclaimed plain along the upper Rhine.
Rail and road lines
Railway and main roads cross the plain in long straight sections. They connect the town toward Frankfurt, Mainz and Darmstadt and frame the built-up area.
