Guadalupe sits on the dry central plateau of Mexico, directly beside the city of Zacatecas. The two places have grown into each other along the main roads and now form a single metropolitan area. On a map, the older core of Guadalupe appears as a tight grid of short blocks. Newer neighbourhoods spread outward in looser patterns across the open, semi-arid land around it.
The town grew up around its Franciscan convent. The convent was founded in the early eighteenth century as a missionary college, and today it houses a museum known for its large collection of colonial religious painting. In plan, the convent complex shows as a solid block at the edge of the historic streets. The small plazas and church fronts that open onto it give the old centre its shape.
A Guadalupe map poster shows a city defined by its connections. Wide roads run west toward Zacatecas, residential districts fill the gaps between them, and hills and arroyos break up the grid at the edges.
