La mappa
Hala lies in Matiari district in Sindh, on the plain east of the Indus River, north of Hyderabad. The country around it is flat and irrigated by canals, and on the map the town appears as a compact knot of streets with a main highway nearby and straight channels and field boundaries running through the surrounding farmland.
The town is well known across Pakistan for its crafts: glazed blue and white tiles and pottery, lacquered woodwork, and textiles such as ajrak and hand-woven cloth. It is also home to the shrine of the Sufi saint Makhdoom Nooh, which draws pilgrims throughout the year and gives the old town its main focus.
A Hala map poster shows the old centre of dense, irregular lanes, the roads leading toward the highway and the neat geometry of the canal-irrigated plain around it. The contrast between the organic town and the ruled lines of the farmland makes a clear, graphic image.
The shrine of Makhdoom Nooh sits within the older part of town, surrounded by the dense lanes and markets that grew up around it.
Irrigation channels and straight field edges run across the plain around Hala, adding long, precise lines to the edges of the map.
The older streets, where workshops for tiles, lacquerware and textiles are found, form a close, irregular network typical of historic Sindhi towns.

Perché Hala
Hala's name is closely tied to Sindhi craft and devotion, and a map of the town means a lot to people with family there. It records the shape of a place known across the region for its work.
