Halabja lies in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, on a fertile plain near the border with Iran, with the steep ridges of the Hawraman mountains rising to the east. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets on flat ground, with orchards and fields around it and the mountains filling the edge of the map.
Halabja is known across the world for the chemical attack of March 1988, in which thousands of civilians were killed. The town has since been rebuilt, and a memorial and monument now stand at its entrance. In 2014 it became the capital of its own governorate, and it remains a centre for the surrounding villages and farmland.
