Handa sits on the eastern shore of the Chita Peninsula in Aichi, facing Kinuura Bay south of Nagoya. On a map, the coastline and port areas form the eastern edge, with reclaimed industrial land cut into straight quays. Inland, residential streets spread across low ground, and a small canal runs through the old centre towards the bay.
The city has long been a centre of brewing and fermentation. The vinegar maker Mizkan has its home here, and old black-walled warehouses line the canal. Handa is also the birthplace of Nankichi Niimi, the children's author known for the story Gongitsune, and the area associated with him draws visitors to the spider lilies along a nearby river.
