La mappa

Hezuo Map Poster & Print

Hezuo is the capital of the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in southern Gansu, on the northeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau at an altitude of almost 3,000 metres. The town follows a valley between grassy hills, and on a map it takes a long, narrow form, with streets running along the valley floor and thinning out where the slopes begin.

Its name is usually explained as coming from a Tibetan word for antelope. The best-known landmark is the Milarepa Palace, part of the Hezuo monastery, a nine-storey tower dedicated to the Tibetan saint Milarepa. Around it, monastic buildings, prayer wheels and residential streets form a denser cluster within the valley.

Hezuo is a gateway to the grasslands and monasteries of Gannan, including Labrang at Xiahe, and its main road connects Lanzhou with the high country further south. A Hezuo map poster captures a town shaped entirely by its terrain, a ribbon of streets held between open hills.

Valley ribbon

The built-up area stretches along the valley floor in a long, slender band, so the town's form on the print is defined by the hills on either side.

02

Milarepa Palace

The nine-storey tower and its monastery form a distinct cluster within the town, an important point of orientation on the map.

03

Grassland slopes

Open, treeless hills rise directly behind the last streets, leaving wide areas of empty space that make the thin lines of the town stand out.
