Hindley is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan in Greater Manchester, just east of Wigan itself. On a map, its main road runs through the centre from west to east, with the older streets arranged along it and rows of terraces branching off on either side. The railway line cuts through the town, and newer housing estates fill the edges.
Like much of this part of Lancashire, Hindley grew with coal mining and textile mills in the nineteenth century. Those industries have gone, but their traces remain in the street pattern: tight rows of terraced houses close to the centre, and open land and green areas where collieries and industrial sites once stood.
