Idar is a town in Sabarkantha district, in northeastern Gujarat, at the edge of the Aravalli foothills. It was once the seat of the princely state of Idar. Its most striking feature is the ring of rocky granite hills rising right behind the town, crowned by the old Idariya Gadh fort. The town is also known for its traditional lacquered wooden toys.
On a map, the older town is a dense weave of narrow lanes packed against the base of the hills, while newer areas and main roads spread across the flatter land beyond.
