Illela lies in the far north of Sokoto State, close to Nigeria's border with the Republic of Niger. The land around it is flat, semi-arid Sahel. On a map the town is a dense knot of streets and compounds against wide, mostly empty ground. Roads run out across the plain in several directions, and that radiating pattern is the clearest thing the map shows.
The town is known above all as a trading place. It sits on the route toward Birni-N'Konni in Niger, which has made Illela an important cross-border market where goods, livestock and people move between the two countries. From above, the roads that carry this traffic give the plan a practical, working character rather than a planned one.
