Indio is the largest city in the Coachella Valley, in the desert of Riverside County, and its map follows the square-mile section grid used across the American West. Major roads meet at regular intervals, with neighbourhoods, golf courses and agricultural plots filling in the squares between them.
Interstate 10 crosses the city on a diagonal, one of the few lines that break the grid. Indio is known for date farming, celebrated at the long-running National Date Festival, and for the Empire Polo Club, where the Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals are held each spring. The polo fields appear as broad open rectangles.
