Itaberaba lies in the interior of Bahia, in the semi-arid country west of Salvador. On a map it appears as a compact town with a fairly regular grid at its centre, surrounded by newer neighbourhoods and roads that stretch into a landscape of low hills, pasture and caatinga scrub. The BR-242 highway runs past the town, linking the coast with the western interior.
The name comes from the Tupi language and is usually translated as shining stone. The town lies within the basin of the Paraguaçu River and serves as a commercial centre for a wide rural region devoted to cattle and agriculture. Travellers heading west toward the Chapada Diamantina often pass through on the way.
