Ivaiporã sits on the rolling uplands of central-northern Paraná, in the region drained by the Ivaí River. The town grew during the wave of mid-twentieth-century colonisation that opened this part of the state to farming. Its map shows that planned beginning, with a regular grid of blocks at the centre and main roads running out along the ridges.
Like many towns in northern Paraná, Ivaiporã was laid out with streets at right angles and space for squares and public buildings. Over time the grid has grown outward across the gentle slopes, and newer districts fill in the edges. Farmland surrounds it on all sides, divided by rural roads.
