Ixtapan de la Sal lies in the southern part of the State of Mexico, where the land drops from the high Toluca plateau into warmer valleys. The town is best known for its thermal springs. Balnearios and spa hotels have drawn visitors here for generations, mostly from Mexico City and Toluca.
On a map, the historic core follows the familiar Mexican pattern of a central plaza with a church and a compact grid of streets around it. Toward the edges the grid loosens. Streets bend to follow the terrain, and larger blocks mark the resort grounds and water parks. Main roads run north toward Tonatico and Toluca.
