La mappa
İznik Map Poster & Print
İznik lies on the eastern shore of Lake İznik in Bursa Province, northwestern Turkey. It is the ancient city of Nicaea, and its plan is one of the clearest historic layouts in the country. Two main streets cross at right angles in the centre and run between four gates in the old walls. The grid around them still follows the ancient plan.
The city walls, rebuilt and extended in Roman and Byzantine times, still enclose much of the town in a loop about five kilometres long. Nicaea hosted the First Council of Nicaea in 325, which produced the Nicene Creed. In the Ottoman period, İznik became famous for its glazed tiles and pottery. The Hagia Sophia, once a church, stands near the central crossroads.
An İznik map poster shows this continuity in a single frame: the lake along the western side, the ring of walls, the cross of the main streets and the regular blocks inside. Few places show so plainly on a modern map an urban plan laid out in antiquity.

Ring of walls
The Roman and Byzantine walls trace a long loop around the town. On the poster they form a clear enclosing line that frames the grid inside.
Lake İznik
The lake stretches away to the west, its broad surface meeting the town along the shoreline and giving the map a calm, open side.
