The city of Izu covers a broad stretch of the central Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture. It reaches from river valleys up into the forested Amagi mountains. Settlement follows the water. The Kano River and its tributaries carve the land into long valleys, and towns and villages line them, separated by wooded ridges that stay almost blank on the map.
The best-known part of the city is Shuzenji, an old hot spring town that grew around a temple of the same name. Its narrow lanes follow a small river through a wooded valley. Further south, the road climbs toward the Amagi Pass, a route made famous by Yasunari Kawabata's story The Dancing Girl of Izu. Rice fields and wasabi terraces fill the flatter ground in places.
