Jasper is the seat of Dubois County in southern Indiana. Its centre follows a traditional Midwestern plan, with a courthouse square surrounded by a regular grid of streets. The Patoka River winds along the edge of town, and its bends break up the grid so that the map never feels too rigid.
The town is known for its German Catholic heritage. St Joseph Catholic Church, a large stone church, is one of its best-known buildings, and the annual Strassenfest celebrates those roots.
