Jeffersonville sits on the Indiana bank of the Ohio River, directly across from downtown Louisville. The river dominates any map of the city. It is wide, with a strong curve, and its far bank is lined with Louisville's dense streets. Several bridges connect the two cities and cross the water as long diagonal and straight lines.
The town's early plan was based on a checkerboard idea associated with Thomas Jefferson, which alternated built blocks with open squares. Although the scheme was later largely abandoned, the older streets near the river keep a clear, regular grid. The Big Four Bridge, a former railroad bridge, now carries walkers and cyclists between the two waterfronts.
