La mappa
Jipijapa Map Poster & Print
Jipijapa lies inland in the south of Manabí province, in Ecuador's coastal region, among dry hills a short distance from the Pacific. The town fits into uneven terrain. Its central streets form a grid, but that grid bends and breaks at the edges, where the ground rises and falls. Roads lead out toward the coast and to other towns in the province.
The name is known far beyond Ecuador. Jipijapa has long been associated with the weaving of toquilla straw hats, the hats often called Panama hats, and in some places the hat and its fibre have been called by the town's name. The surrounding area is also known for coffee growing.
A Jipijapa map poster shows a compact centre with streets fraying into the hills around it. Irregular blocks give the plan a hand-made quality. The result is warm and grounded, much like the crafts the town is known for.

Hillside edges
On the outskirts, streets bend and end where the terrain becomes too steep. The town's outline becomes jagged as a result.
Roads toward the coast
Main roads leave the town toward the Pacific coast and other parts of Manabí. They connect Jipijapa to the wider region.
