Jupiter lies on the Atlantic coast of southeast Florida, at the northern end of Palm Beach County. The map is dominated by water. The Loxahatchee River winds in from the west and meets the ocean through Jupiter Inlet, while the Intracoastal Waterway runs north to south, separating the mainland from a narrow barrier strip of beaches.
Streets on the mainland spread in the curving loops and cul-de-sacs of Florida suburbs, broken by canals, golf courses and preserved wetlands. Along the coast, roads run parallel to the shoreline, and bridges cross the waterways at intervals. The combination produces a map with many edges and islands rather than a single dense centre.
Jupiter is known for the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, a red brick tower completed in the nineteenth century and still a landmark at the mouth of the river.
