Kaech’ŏn lies in the uplands of South Pyongan province, north of Pyongyang, in the Ch’ŏngch’ŏn river basin. It grew as an industrial town based on coal mining, and its form follows that history. Built-up areas stretch along the valleys, rail spurs head towards pits and works, and steep wooded hills limit how far the streets can spread.
