Kahnūj is in the south of Kerman Province, in a low, warm basin in southeastern Iran. From above, the town lies on an open plain, with mountains rising some distance away. The main roads cross in the centre, and fields and groves extend outward along irrigation lines.
The surrounding area is agricultural, and the warm climate supports crops that would not grow on the higher Iranian plateau, including date palms and citrus. The town serves as a local centre for the villages across the plain, and roads connect it to Jiroft and the wider region.
