La mappa

Karakul’ Map Poster & Print

Karakul’ is a town in the Bukhara Region of Uzbekistan, southwest of the city of Bukhara. It sits in the irrigated lowland of the lower Zeravshan basin. On a map it is compact and surrounded by a geometric pattern of fields and canals. Beyond the cultivated zone, the land turns to desert.

The town gave its name to the karakul breed of sheep. The breed is famous for the tightly curled pelts of its lambs, traded for centuries and known in many places as astrakhan or Persian lamb. Raising these animals was long part of the economy of the oases and steppes around Bukhara.

A Karakul’ map poster shows how dependent the settlement is on water. Canals and roads run in straight lines through farmland, and the town's streets gather where they meet. Farther out the pattern stops abruptly, and the white paper stands in for open desert. It is a strong, spare image of a Central Asian oasis.

01

Irrigation network

Straight canals and field boundaries divide the land around the town into long strips. This geometry is the defining feature of the map.

02

Town centre

The streets gather into a small core where the main roads meet. It is a clear point of density in a spread-out agricultural landscape.

03

Desert edge

Beyond the cultivated land, the network stops. The sudden transition to empty space shows the limit of the oasis on the poster.
