La mappa

Karasuyama Map Poster & Print

Karasuyama is a small former castle town in eastern Tochigi Prefecture, now part of the city of Nasukarasuyama. Its centre lies in a valley with wooded hills on either side, and the main streets follow the valley floor in a long, slightly curving line. Traditional shops and houses line these roads, and side streets climb toward the slopes where the old castle once stood.

The town is known for its Yamaage festival, in which huge painted stage sets are carried through the streets for open-air kabuki performances. It is part of the Yama, Hoko, Yatai float festivals listed by UNESCO in 2016. Karasuyama is also the terminus of the JR Karasuyama Line, and the Naka River flows past to the west.

A Karasuyama map poster captures a Japanese town plan shaped by terrain. The main street makes a clear spine, the hills leave blank space on either side, and the river adds a long, flowing line. At smaller print sizes it has an almost calligraphic feel, a few strong strokes and fine detail between them.
