La mappa

Kashiwara Map Poster & Print

Kashiwara lies in the southern Nara Basin, a flat plain ringed by low mountains. Its map is shaped by three small, isolated hills known as the Yamato Sanzan: Unebi, Miminashi and Kagu. They rise from the paddy fields and suburbs like islands, and on a street map they appear as quiet green gaps in an otherwise even pattern of roads, rail lines and houses.

This is where Fujiwara-kyō was built at the end of the seventh century, the first Japanese capital laid out on a Chinese-style grid, before the court moved north to Nara. At the foot of Mount Unebi, Kashihara Shrine is linked by tradition to the enthronement of Emperor Jimmu. The preserved merchant district of Imai-chō keeps its old block pattern of narrow lanes.

A Kashiwara map poster brings these layers together: the regular lines of modern streets, the tight lanes of Imai-chō, and the rounded shapes of the three hills. In black and white, the basin reads as a calm field of lines broken by a few deliberate open spaces, which suits a place so closely tied to the beginnings of Japanese urban planning.

01

Three Yamato hills

Unebi, Miminashi and Kagu rise separately from the plain, forming three distinct unbuilt shapes that give the map its most recognisable points of reference.

02

Fujiwara-kyō site

The site of the ancient capital lies among the three hills, where open archaeological ground interrupts the modern street pattern around it.

03

Imai-chō lanes

The old merchant town of Imai-chō shows as a compact block of narrow, closely spaced lanes, finer and denser than the surrounding suburban streets.
