Kerūr is in Bagalkot district, in the north of Karnataka, on the Deccan plateau. The countryside around it is broad, dry and open, with fields stretching between scattered villages and rocky outcrops. On a map, the town is a compact centre of streets and markets where main roads meet before leading out across the plateau.
The town is not far from Badami, known for its sandstone cliffs and rock-cut cave temples, and it lies within a region with some of the oldest temple architecture in South India. Kerūr itself is a working market town that serves the surrounding villages.
