Keta is a coastal town in the Volta Region of Ghana, built on a narrow sandbar between the Gulf of Guinea and the Keta Lagoon, the largest lagoon in the country. From above, its setting is dramatic. There is a slim strip of land with water close on both sides, and the streets are squeezed along its length.
The town has long struggled with coastal erosion. Over the decades the sea has taken away large parts of the old town, and major sea defences were eventually built to protect what remains. Near the shore stand the remains of Fort Prinzenstein, built by the Danes in the eighteenth century.
