Khāliş is a town in Diyala Governorate in eastern Iraq, north of the provincial capital Baqubah. It lies in the farmland watered by the Diyala River, a tributary of the Tigris. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets surrounded by green: palm groves, orchards and fields crossed by irrigation canals that have been part of this landscape for a very long time.
The map is at its best where the built-up core meets that watered ground. Streets stay fairly regular near the centre. Outside it, the pattern turns into thin canals, field boundaries and farm tracks, so the town seems to float in a finely lined field. Roads link Khāliş with Baqubah and the other towns of the governorate.
