Khāsh lies in the province of Sistan and Baluchestan in south-eastern Iran, on a high plateau between Zahedan and the south of the province. From above it is a compact town with a fairly regular street pattern. Main roads cross near the centre, and the edges give way quickly to arid, open land.
The landscape around Khāsh is dramatic even on a flat map. To the north rises Taftan, a large volcano and one of the most prominent peaks in south-eastern Iran. The town's elevation gives it a milder climate than the lowland deserts nearby, and it serves as a local centre for the surrounding Baluch communities.
