Kitakami lies in the long valley of the Kitakami River in Iwate Prefecture, between the Ōu Mountains to the west and the Kitakami highlands to the east. The city centre sits near the point where the Waga River joins the main river, so the map shows two waterways meeting, crossed by bridges, with streets and rice fields spreading across the valley floor.
The city is best known in Japan for Tenshōchi Park, a riverside park whose long avenue of cherry trees makes it one of the most famous spring viewing sites in the Tōhoku region. Kitakami is also a transport and industrial hub, with a Shinkansen station and large industrial parks built along the expressway corridor.
