The ruin of Burg Königstein, one of the largest castle ruins in Germany, dominates the town's centre. Königstein became a climatic spa town in the nineteenth century, drawing visitors for its air and views, and later attracted wealthy residents from Frankfurt. The Großer Feldberg, the highest peak of the Taunus, lies a short distance to the north.
