Koppies is a small town in the northern Free State of South Africa. Its name is the Afrikaans word for the small, isolated rocky hills common in this part of the Highveld. On the map, the town is a compact grid of streets on open grassland, with the Renoster River nearby and farmland spreading out to the horizon.
The layout is simple and typical of the Free State. The original town has straight streets and regular blocks around a central area, and a separate township lies apart from the main town, a pattern shaped by the country's history. Beyond them, large farm plots and long straight roads cut across the flat, open land.
