Mahamaham tank
The large tank at the heart of the town, surrounded by small shrines and steps, is the site of the twelve-yearly festival. It appears as a clear geometric shape among the dense streets.

La mappa
Kumbakonam Map Poster & Print
Kumbakonam lies in the Kaveri delta of Tamil Nadu, on a strip of land between the Kaveri River to the north and the Arasalar to the south. The town is dense and old, and its streets bend around temple compounds and water tanks. Irrigated paddy fields surround it on every side, crossed by channels that carry river water across the delta.
Kumbakonam is known as a temple town, with dozens of temples within its limits. Every twelve years, the Mahamaham festival draws very large crowds to bathe in the Mahamaham tank at the centre of town. Nearby Darasuram holds the Airavatesvara Temple, part of the UNESCO-listed Great Living Chola Temples, and the town is also associated with strong filter coffee.
A Kumbakonam map poster shows how sacred geography shapes a town: rectangular temple enclosures, the outlines of large tanks, and streets that circle them as processional routes. Between the two rivers the pattern is tightly packed, and the channels and fields of the delta frame it in fine lines on both sides.

Two rivers
The Kaveri and the Arasalar run parallel on either side of the town. They frame it with two long, curving lines and define its narrow, elongated shape.
Temple streets
Streets around the major temples form rectangular circuits used for processions. This pattern gives the centre of Kumbakonam an ordered structure within its old, closely built fabric.
